01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

With juicy fruit peeking through tender white mochi and tiny eyes fixed above, the whimsical Youkai Daifuku is the defining specialty of Edo Usagi. Available year-round, the Youkai Strawberry Daifuku pairs supple mochi with smooth koshian (fine sweet red bean paste), styled so the tart-sweet berry resembles an outstretched tongue. Another enduring staple is the Youkai Apricot Daifuku, combining the gentle tang of syrup-simmered apricot with velvety red bean paste for a balanced, mellow finish.

The changing seasonal cast is just as enticing. From summer into autumn, crisp, juicy Shine Muscat and plump Nagano Purple grapes arrive enveloped in delicate shiroan (sweet white bean paste), while winter brings the Youkai Cinnamon Apple Daifuku, featuring tender-crisp apples stewed with cinnamon, sugar, and lemon. From American cherries in early summer to bouncy mizudaifuku made with special starch in midsummer, each season offers a fresh balance of juicy fruit and textural chew.

Beyond daifuku, the counter offers hybrid treats such as the Raw Choux Mochi An, pairing light choux pastry baked in-house with stretchy gyuhi and generous tsubuan (chunky sweet red bean paste). The kitchen also prepares a nostalgic, firm pudding made with free-range Sagamikko eggs. Sweets pair naturally with the teahouse selection, including the crisp fragrance and refined sweetness of deep-steamed Tsuyuhikari sencha or Higurashi Hojicha, a stem-roasted hojicha fired at high heat for a fragrant, roasty profile.

Sweets are available for takeout as well as inside the calm tearoom. Compact and endearing, these daifuku make delightful gifts, and stopping by to see which seasonal fruit has arrived adds an extra pleasure to a walk through the neighborhood.
